Open Your Eyes by Bobby Caldwell

June 12, 2008 - 1:31 pm No Comments

Every time I hear a good rap song, there’s a very good chance that it was sampled from another song that’s even better. You may have heard of Bobby Caldwell through a couple of other songs. His more popular song “What You Won’t Do For Love” has been sampled on a quite a few popular songs, such as 2Pac “Do For Love” and Tatyana Ali’s “Boy You Knock Me Out”. Common sampled “Open Your Eyes” for his very popular hit “The Light”. You know what’s crazy, was that I always thought Bobby Caldwell was black, but he’s not. This is a great song, peep the lyrics.

Oh Sheila by Ready for the World

I heard this song at 99 Ranch Market when I was a kid. At the time, of course, I had no idea what song titles were sung by which artists or groups. I just had the words, “oh, oh sheila…” stuck in my mind. Going to 99 Ranch Market was something my dad and I did. On Saturdays or whenever I had a reason to be in Little Saigon, usually for an appointment like doctor, eye doctor, or sometimes just to help my dad. It was something I looked forward to because not only was it was father-son bonding time but because sometimes my dad would take me to eat a Vietnamese restaurant. Our family rarely went out to eat. Most of the time it was always home cooked, or school lunches with our free meal ticket. Also, if we did eat out, it was always at a Vietnamese restaurant or dim sum with my uncle’s family. We never ate at an American restaurant. The only time I remember eating an American restaurant was at Spoon’s because I won an award or a prize or something. I had ribs there.

I have a memory of my dad ordering mì xào dòn, which is an egg noodle dish. It was something I had never saw before because there was no soup. Another time was when my dad and I tried this new restaurant on Bolsa. The service was very very slow, probably because it had just opened. My dad was not too happy with that, but eventually we got our food. My dad didn’t leave a tip but then again I don’t remember my dad being much of a big tipper.

Embedding was not allowed for the official video. I could of gone with the one with just a static album art but I decided to go with this Napoleon Dynamite dude dancing to the song.

Cupid Shuffle by Cupid

Ok since the last two songs were sad, I’m going to change it up with something totally awesome, The Cupid Shuffle. How cool is that - to name a dance after yourself. Since I don’t listen to the radio, I had no idea it was a hip hop song. I first heard the song from my copy of the Promo Only Rhythm Club October 2007 issue. The first mix I heard was the Solitaire Club mix, which I think is a great dance song. When I first heard the original mix, I thought the beat was really catchy, I didn’t have to pay attention to the lyrics. Check out the video, it’s probably going to be a classic line dance at weddings in the future. It’s right up there with my personal favorite, the classic Electric Slide. Down down do your dance do your dance. It’s so easy, even white people can do it.
