Dirty Harry by Gorillaz

Going to be in San Diego this weekend. Work and stuff. Oh it’s going to be a warm weekend. So keeping up with the series of dance songs how about this one? It’s got a great funky beat to step to. I heard this song at Banana Republic but I didn’t know what the song was until almost a year later I realized I had the song all along. Haha. I really need to listen to the entire album. I had the Demon Days album in my iTunes library and I always listened to Feel Good, Inc. I never realized this song was right before it. Ha! I’m not a fan of the rapping at the end though, it messes up the vibe.

I need a gun, cause all I do is dance.

Dear Mama by 2Pac

My mom is a simple woman. She doesn’t speak English. She doesn’t have a driver’s license. She doesn’t have a credit card. She doesn’t know who Ralph Lauren is. She doesn’t shop for fun. She doesn’t know how to use a computer to read this entry. She doesn’t care to spend money on herself. She has always put her children first and has taken care of us to the best of her knowledge. She’s a simple woman and that’s why I love her.

Air Force Ones by Nelly

In the movie Superbad (which was a great movie) , Jonah Hill’s character Seth revealed that when he was a kid he couldn’t stop drawing pictures of penises. Yep, dicks and balls. It was a hilarious bit. So what does it has to do with this song by Nelly? Well when I was a kid, I kept drawing shoes. I would draw all kinds of shoes, but my favorite ones to draw were Nike’s. Strange, I know. Probably because my parents never bought me a pair of Nike’s. Nope, I wore shoes from Payless. Spalding. High school came around and we moved up to buying clothes at Ross. I saw a pair of Nike’s there and they were my size and price range so my dad said it was OK for me to buy them.

Back in the days I only had two forms of footwear. One was athletic shoes and the other was sandals bought from some shop in Little Saigon. The athletic shoes was my daily shoe that wore all the time, and my parents would only buy me another pair when either I outgrew my shoes or they fell apart. My mom would wash my shoes so they would look brand new. Going back to the pair of Nike’s. I was pretty excited to get them because they were my first pair. Even though they were this blue-ish/purple-ish color, since I’ve always wanted Nike’s I got them anyway. And I wore them everyday in 10th grade. Even if people made fun of my purple Nike’s.

Thinking back, it was kind of stupid of me to want a pair of Nike’s. This was before I found out Nike pays the people that make them pennies compared to what they charge retail. Even though I had purple Nike’s, at least I didn’t make the fashion mistake of wearing socks with sandals like some of the Korean gangsta (wanna-be’s) at my school. Of course at the time I thought wearing sandals with socks were also cool. Oh my have I grown up. I currently have 17 pairs of shoes, 2 of them Nike’s. 4 pairs of Converse, which is also owned by Nike ironically.

Once again, the official video did not allow embedding so here is a slide show with the song. The song is basically an ad for Nike, I wouldn’t be surprised if Nike paid Nelly.

Juicy by Notorious B.I.G.

I’m celebrating my 25th post. If this blog was a TV show, it would be the Season 2 premiere. I also just found out that I can post-date my entries and the system will post my entries on that date and time that I specify. Sweet. So if it looks like I posted something at 3am and there were no specific time references in my entry, I probably wrote it before. I should have a whole bunch of posts lined up so in case I die at least my website would go on. Like 2Pac or even Notorious B.I.G. may they rest in peace.

Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis when I was dead broke man I couldn’t picture this. My family grew up poor. We lived in a 2 bedroom 1 bathroom apartment in a low income housing area. It was me and my two younger sister in beds in one room. Then mom was pregnant with Lisa. To get a sense on how small the room was, just imagine 3 twin size beds across the room. A baby crib at the end of my bed, and a dresser at the of the of the other bed with the door right next to the dresser. Since I was the only boy and the oldest, I had to move to the living room when Lisa was old enough. I had one of those fold up beds and a fold up table. It wasn’t until I was 16 when we moved to a bigger apartment and I got my own room.

At one point when I was in college I may have forgotten where I came from. It’s safe to say that I’m doing pretty well for myself now but in college I tried to keep up with my more wealthier friends lifestyle. Always eating out and buying electronics. Now I have no debt (got out of debt 3 years ago) and plenty of money in the bank. A closet full of clothes now but when I was younger I pretty much wore the same thing every week. Now I can go the whole year without wearing the exact same outfit. In high school I thought I would never own the car I have now. And this list could go on.

I still have fond memories of growing up in that little apartment. Simple times. And even though we didn’t have much we always had fun. I can’t believe it now, but we played hide-and-seek in our little apartment. There really weren’t that many places to hide. Also remember Lisa, we played baseball in the apartment with a ball made out of tape and a small plastic yellow bat that we probably found in the trash or something. Simple times indeed. And if you don’t know, now you know.

Royal Flush by Outkast featuring Raekwon

This is a leaked song so I don’t really have much information about it. I just know there’s going to be a new Outkast album. It’s been a while since they released a proper Outkast album. Idlewild was a soundtrack, and Speakerboxxx/Love Below were solo albums by Andre 3000 and Big Boi. You’ll have to go back to the album Stankonia. Ah yeah, I remember when the song “Bombs Over Baghdad” came out. Back then it was just a song, not a reality. “B.O.B” was awesome, it just had that raw energy. I first heard of Outkast way back when they were hardcore hip-hop with Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik. I owned the CD and thought they were going to be big. Turns out I was right.
