The Interview by AFI

April 30, 2008 - 10:59 pm No Comments

I love this song by AFI. I first heard about them when they went mainstream with their album Sing the Sorrow. I actually got free tickets for their concert in 2003 but gave them away because I really wasn’t into the band at the time. Their sound was too cult-ish hardcore punk for me. However, when I heard them on Saturday Night Light live perform the song “Love Like Winter” and I was hooked on their use of synthesizers, a hark to the new wave sound. The album Decemberunderground became one of my favorite albums for that year (2006). Out of 12 tracks, 1 being a prelude, 9 of the 11 remaining songs are 5 star good for me.

I’m sure a lot of their die hard original fans would hate AFI since they sold out to mainstream. Kinda like how Goo Goo Dolls became mainstream. It’s only a natural progression. Decemberunderground is a well polished melodically acute album but chock full of abjected lyrics. Just have a listen to The Interview, it’s haunting but I love it. I don’t think I’ll go emo and wear eyeliner and dress all in black hough. It took me a few listen to appreciate the album.

Forever waiting for disaster…the song is not a single, so some guy cut some AFI videos together.

You Shook Me All Night Long by AC/DC

April 28, 2008 - 10:24 pm No Comments

Too tired to write anything substantial. It’s too hot.

On another note, I finally got this album over the weekend. It took me forever to find out who sung this song. I mean it I heard it a couple of times. I thought it was Aerosmith or something. I kept googling, “she’ll be all right now”. Ahh, misheard lyrics, damn. I don’t know every song, but it feels so good when I finally found a song I heard.

Now I just have 1 song left. I heard this song way back in the days on 94.9. I don’t remember any of the lyrics but it had a rocking guitar beat and the singer seemed European. Now, if I ever find that song, I would really be happy.

This song I’m starting to listen on repeat. Pure rock ‘n’ roll. Who would of thought AC/DC was from Australia.

Going to be in LA this weekend, so I’m going to keep it simple.

I like this song.

Visit her myspace page.

Will return to more insightful entries next week.

By the way, the video is pretty cool. I played Kingdom Hearts on my PS2 back in the days and it was awesome.

Air Force Ones by Nelly

In the movie Superbad (which was a great movie) , Jonah Hill’s character Seth revealed that when he was a kid he couldn’t stop drawing pictures of penises. Yep, dicks and balls. It was a hilarious bit. So what does it has to do with this song by Nelly? Well when I was a kid, I kept drawing shoes. I would draw all kinds of shoes, but my favorite ones to draw were Nike’s. Strange, I know. Probably because my parents never bought me a pair of Nike’s. Nope, I wore shoes from Payless. Spalding. High school came around and we moved up to buying clothes at Ross. I saw a pair of Nike’s there and they were my size and price range so my dad said it was OK for me to buy them.

Back in the days I only had two forms of footwear. One was athletic shoes and the other was sandals bought from some shop in Little Saigon. The athletic shoes was my daily shoe that wore all the time, and my parents would only buy me another pair when either I outgrew my shoes or they fell apart. My mom would wash my shoes so they would look brand new. Going back to the pair of Nike’s. I was pretty excited to get them because they were my first pair. Even though they were this blue-ish/purple-ish color, since I’ve always wanted Nike’s I got them anyway. And I wore them everyday in 10th grade. Even if people made fun of my purple Nike’s.

Thinking back, it was kind of stupid of me to want a pair of Nike’s. This was before I found out Nike pays the people that make them pennies compared to what they charge retail. Even though I had purple Nike’s, at least I didn’t make the fashion mistake of wearing socks with sandals like some of the Korean gangsta (wanna-be’s) at my school. Of course at the time I thought wearing sandals with socks were also cool. Oh my have I grown up. I currently have 17 pairs of shoes, 2 of them Nike’s. 4 pairs of Converse, which is also owned by Nike ironically.

Once again, the official video did not allow embedding so here is a slide show with the song. The song is basically an ad for Nike, I wouldn’t be surprised if Nike paid Nelly.

Oh Sheila by Ready for the World

I heard this song at 99 Ranch Market when I was a kid. At the time, of course, I had no idea what song titles were sung by which artists or groups. I just had the words, “oh, oh sheila…” stuck in my mind. Going to 99 Ranch Market was something my dad and I did. On Saturdays or whenever I had a reason to be in Little Saigon, usually for an appointment like doctor, eye doctor, or sometimes just to help my dad. It was something I looked forward to because not only was it was father-son bonding time but because sometimes my dad would take me to eat a Vietnamese restaurant. Our family rarely went out to eat. Most of the time it was always home cooked, or school lunches with our free meal ticket. Also, if we did eat out, it was always at a Vietnamese restaurant or dim sum with my uncle’s family. We never ate at an American restaurant. The only time I remember eating an American restaurant was at Spoon’s because I won an award or a prize or something. I had ribs there.

I have a memory of my dad ordering mì xào dòn, which is an egg noodle dish. It was something I had never saw before because there was no soup. Another time was when my dad and I tried this new restaurant on Bolsa. The service was very very slow, probably because it had just opened. My dad was not too happy with that, but eventually we got our food. My dad didn’t leave a tip but then again I don’t remember my dad being much of a big tipper.

Embedding was not allowed for the official video. I could of gone with the one with just a static album art but I decided to go with this Napoleon Dynamite dude dancing to the song.
